Welcome to the Philippines!

15:30 Local Time. We’ve been at sea for three days. Since sunrise this morning we’ve been in sight of the Philippine archipelago as we thread our way through various straights on our approach to Cebu City from the east.

It has been a relaxing and uneventful passage from Palau. Seas were a bit choppy the first night, and it rained for awhile every day; but otherwise the trip was smooth, comfortable, and much too short!

We will not arrive in Cebu until much later this evening; and we’ll be confined to our ship until Customs and Immigration clears us in the morning.

Our American Flag is flying high, along with a Philippines courtesy flag and the yellow quarantine flag we must fly until cleared.

Alida has been busily cleaning the entire inside of the ship, while Brian has been cleaning the decks. All hands have pitched in to ensure The Global Adventure looks her best when we arrive.

About The Philippines

More than 90 million people live here – in an area about the size of Arizona. Yet, as we arrive you would never know it. We’ve seen few people so far, and the verdant hillsides we’ve passed at least until now are dotted with only occasional buildings.

But when we dock at the Cebu Yacht Club, we’ll be in the midst of a 750,000-person city. When we eventually arrive in Manila, we’ll be within a 10-million-person metropolis.

The average annual income here is $5,000, but nearly 15 million Filipinos live on less than $1 per day, and nearly half of all Filipinos live on less than $2 per day.

18:30. We’re still about 30 miles east of Cebu City. We spent most of the afternoon crossing the Camotes Sea, dodging small fishing boats, reefs, and nets along the way. With early evening has come a bit of rain. We should be securely docked at the Cebu Yacht Club within four hours. Meanwhile, Alida is preparing chicken salad for dinner.

For now all we can do is enjoy the ride as we make our way to Cebu…

    Hey Keith,

Just wanted to let you know that I’ve enjoyed listening to you every Sunday morning since you left San Diego. I liked your financial show, but as a future globe trotter, I’m living vicariously through you for now.

Good luck with your adventure. I’ll continue to listen and read your blog on a weekly basis.

    Best regards,

    Glenn Marion
