YOU MAY OWN THE YACHET BUT I NOT SO SURE THAT I WOULD ARGUE WITH THE CAPTAIN OVER THE AIR CONDITIONER.
YOUR LIFE IS IN HIS HANDS ! !
mr. degreen,
wow. your trip has me truly amazed. it always puts a smile on my face to know that someone who has done such a wonderful job planning for the future is enjoying the benefits of their labor. too many people cling to a professional existance for too long, whether or not financial independence is a reality. i offer you congratulations and best of luck in your newfound oceanic, nomadic existence. it does sadden me somewhat to assume that your travels may keep you away from az politics, but then again, if i was in your shoes, i wouldn’t want that headache either!
at the age of 28, i have vivid ideas of a retirement within 20 yearsish. i first called your show about six or so years ago and was quite broke. now i own an apartment complex and two rental houses. i firmly believe my retirement dreams will become a reality. your advice over the years has most certainly played a major role in my decisions. thanks for the advice and for being such a strong political and finacial role model.
carpe diem,
randy ziegler
ps. i’ll be in fiji for a month this summer. any diving suggestions or other must sees that you recommend?
Hi Keith,
You said that Nordhavn keep well their value over the years.
Could you tell a bit more?
Many thanks,
Jean-Louis
Keith,
I’ve been a listener of yours for years and have always enjoyed and learned.
I’m jealous! I’ve been following your Global Adventure since the onset and will continue to do so. I just wish I was with you.
Good luck. Be safe. And God bless.
And please keep up of those colorful and interesting writings of your journey.
Best of luck,

Thanks, Joe. Will do.

Jean-Louis,
Nordhavn’s definately maintain their value far better than most ships. For more — and more accurate — information, I suggest you conatact my friend, Steve Miller, at Nordhavn. He would enjoy hearing from you, and he can give you specific examples of the current market.
You may reach steve at steve@nordhavn.com, or at (949) 496-4933, or on his cell at (949) 212-4085. Seriously, he’d be happy to visit with you.

Sheldon,
Wolf is a terrific Captain, and a friend. I couldn’t do it without him. We are all actively involved in making the right decisions about the ship. I defer to Wolf’s substantial offshore experience regarding safety and navigation issues, and on most maintenance and equipment-operation issues. Please keep in mind that I have owned and single-handed three boats, and that I owned and operated this particular ship for nearly a year before we began our trip. Finally, I have not only a safety interest, but a distinct financial interest in making sure we collectively maintain and use the on-board equipment appropriately, while accomplishing our mission.
–Keith
Keith,
Just wanted to drop a note. We own a Nordhavn 47 (Nexus) and were in san Diego when your boat was there. We are heading north after spending two years in the Carib and coming through the Panama Canal. We are now in British Columbia in route to Alaska. Next year probably the South Pacific.
Frankly, we are not crazy about most of the typical routes via the South Pacific but are more interested in Australia and the sorrounding areas. We were actually thinking about coming as far as Australia, spending two years in the area, and then heading north to japan and then to Alaska via the Aluetions. The jury is still out and we may even head back to the Carib as we loved it there.
Anyway, just wanted to say hey and we look at your site every now and then. Hope the boat has been good.
Stay safe.
keith
looks like you are having fun-if i was younger i would love to sail with you

LARRY,
Sounds like you are living the good life aboard your trusty Nordhavn! Thanks for sharing and — safe seas!
–Keith
Keith, We have always been interested in your program but since your retirement the show has been much more about you and much less about financial advice. I do wish you would take more calls and get back to giving information as you used to. I understand that we always have the option of turning of the radio but just thought you might appreciate the input.
Hey Keith- Great show, and congratulations on taking it to the high seas ! As a sailor, however, I question your choice of a powerboat….but she looks like a beauty…
I was flipping through the photos and it looks like you are perched on the starboard side to me in 1_145 and the caption says portside….
Blue skies, CCR
Chris,
You’re right. I’m changing the caption immediately!
–Keith
Debbie,
I appreciate your input and hope you will keep listening. However, since we adopted our new format, our listenership is up 50%. I am confident if you continue to listen you will receive the global perspective that is so important to investors these days — and some great personal stories along the way.
Finally, taking calls when I’m on satellite is very difficult, frankly, as there is as much as a three-second delay. That can really confuse the caller, and makes for very poor radio. I will, however, make every effort to take as many calls as possible — when possible.
Keith
“HELLO..(tap, tap, tap),is this thing on?…N55 The Global Adventure where are you?”
Hate to be the devils advocate, but what percautions/plans have you made concerning pirate activities in some of the south china sea and other areas that you will be nearing or transversing? I hope I am not bursting your bubble, and am sure this has been addressed. It would be interesting on your take on this, unless it would compromise your plans/safety.
Regarda. Ad Pace
ADDISON,
It would compromise our plans/safety.

DREAMING JOE,
We’re right here in Pohnpei, for another few hours. Then we head to Palau. I’ve been on vacation from my perpetual vacation. Check out all our new photos and videos!

I will have to admit when I first heard you were going to travel around the world on a boat I thought what a waste for someone who would make such a great governor to do. I used to like your show but now I think its the best show on the radio. Your show use to only to be intresting to investor types like myself but now I think it can apeal to everyone. You really know how to make it intresting by showing us the different cultures and histories of all the places you visit. If you keep up the good work I’m sure your show could go National and you will be able to reach more people than just by being governor of Arizona. Maybe you could get Fox TV to back you with a Global Adventure TV show with a bigger boat and a full TV Crew so we can see what you see.
THANKS, Terry! You never know…
–Keith
Nice boat. Nice videos. I ran across your web site while “fuzzy surfing” the Internet. Actually I wanted to ask Steve Buckingham when the Inmarsat BGAN is going to be ready for deployment on yachts. Yacht owners in Southeast Florida area often ask what they should get. Fleet has always been nice because you can turn it off, when compared to VSAT systems which cost $2000 per month every month. I like to have all of the options covered when I give advice on these things.
Nice work on converting the video content for the web. Steve’s definately the man when it comes to the KVH stuff. I’ve worked on installing Cisco Routers and other gear for onboard networking for Inmarsat systems. I do WiFi Hotspot sharing systems and Cellular Card sharing systems as well.
You’ve gotta tell me more about this video box you’ve got in the pilothouse on there though. I’m curious now 🙂
Smooth sailing guys and good work!

ALAN,
You’re right — Steve Buckingham is the MAN! Always very helpful. Regarding our video switcher: It’s a 12-outlet Elbex switcher. However, our unit is now fried. They are sending us a replacement. Through it we are able to see live video from all 11 onboard cameras. Really helps with security.

Keith,
Saw you pictures on the Thorfinn which did sink but only down to the reef. They’re hoping to float it out today and patch the 12″ gash in her hull. No oil has leaked at this point which is a good thing since she has over 80,000 gallons onboard. We’re doing a story on it and a few other things surrounding it of environmental interest. Could we use one or two of your photos? They’re great! If so, who would I credit it to for The Kaselehlie Press?
By the way, sorry we didn’t get a chance to do that interview. I tried your number a few times but it never went through due to the efficiency of our local provider.
BILL,
Absolutely, feel free to use the photos. Credit http://www.theglobaladventure.com. We’ll catch each other next go around!

Hi Keith,
1st time emailer long time listener. I was at one of your informative seminars several years ago and enjoy your radio program from here in Mesa.
As I am listening to your show right now and heard you were in Palau. My god son and best friends son, Jeff Barabe, lives there and owns a film production company called Rollem Productions. If you are there for any sightseeing or history lessons, I bet he would be thrilled to show you around. His wife Cassi helped write the Palau constitution several years ago. Hi Keith,
Have been enjoying your site since I got the link from your recent recruit engineer Brian Wallace. I served with Brian in the Royal Navy F.A.A and as a dinghy sailing partner in Falmouth Cornwall also a very good friend.
Glad he is finally taking note of the technology! was shocked to hear he has an ipod! – bet he still has no laptop though!
Your also a man after my own heart, what a lovely adventure your on, and I am glad I can share some of the things your seeing out there over the internet via pictures & video.
Thanks for reading this, I am backstage at a conference in the Imagination Gallery in london for BCSC shaping retail property, not my interest I am just the freelance sound/video & powerpoint display technician – but they have wireless so I can spend my time looking at your pics & seeing Brian pop up all over your site! – Can you persuade him to start his own blog? I know he has lots to say especially if he is travelling to places he has not been before!
I look forward to your next port of call
Kind regards,

Keep Going Keith!!!!
I’ve posted before…I’m the guy who took his 14 year old son to every ballpark. We got dozens of email every day. Our trip was harder than most people knew. But, the emails that simply said, “Keep going†were the most helpful. I know what you are going through…. Up times and slow times……But never a down time. Keep going. You gotta finish this!!!! The knowledge and understanding that you are getting is immeasurable!!! You gotta finish!!! Keep going Keith!

Ahoy Keith!
I met you and got to know you a little in the mid 80’s right before your Senate run.
During all the years that you and your associates did your “strictly financial” show, I just never had enough money to become a regular start to finish listener 😉
But, Keith, now, you’re nailing it. Now, every Sunday morning your show is absolutely part of my weekend. You accompany me while I do my weekly yard work. Then I have been finding myself listening to you while on your site too, and switching over to see lots of Google Earth as you describe the great places you visit. What you are doing is unique! Your in-depth blend of the financial and cultural aspects of faraway places is fascinating!
Thanks for your recent insights, as well, into the frothy Chinese markets and the looming downside of the recent run-up of sub-prime residential real estate mortgages. Sage, as usual.
Despite how fabulously interesting the places you’re going are, I’m betting that what you had planned as a vacation ……… is gradually becoming more of a vocation ……. and feeling like it! Stay with it, man! It’s darn good work.

I find your sunday morning show very interesting….part travel show, part financial advice. i hope that your trip continues to be fun and informational…i think you should beef up the photo/video section of your web site….it does not quite live up to the radio show commentary…..just a constructive comment.. but thanks for a great show….
you asked for suggestions on your site and here is mine: I truly enjoy your financial and political discussions and you often mention articles that I would like to see a web link to. As you can see at drudgereport.com or hotair.com, they both offer links to sites that I dont need to search out. If you can have links to stories that you either report on the radio or thoes you suggest that would be great. Thank you, Ivan
GOOD INPUT, IVAN. Thanks!

I just wanted you to know that my husband has been listening to your Sunday finacial show for years and was eager to vote you as governor of Arizona. I “put up” with the economic news to keep him happy. Now that you have begun your world adventure, I find myself enjoying your exploits and adventures around the world. You articulate very well in your descriptions of the history, people, and economics of your ports of call. I am amazed at how interweave the economy, politics and culture of the various countries you have visited. I told my husband that your great understanding of these cultures is because you grasp the importance of their economies and world involvement. You have opended my eyes to tryng to learn more about the global economy and I look forward to your “fireside” tales each Sunday. Thank you, Jeanne Dutton (high school teacher of honors and AP chemistry).
Jeanne
JEANNE, Yours is absolutely one of the nicest emails I’ve received. I you have any classes at your school that would like to follow our adventure, I’d be happy to personalize it a bit for them, and to provide a stream of interesting facts and brain teasers to focus their interest on the many peoples and places we’ll visit.
–Keith
Keith,
I could only catch a brief couple minutes of your July 15th program and heard you discussing the educational comparisons of China and the United States. You mentioned a few of the top tiered private schools here in Phoenix. With a young family I am anxious for the best possible education for my children. In your opinion, what are some of the better priviate schools in the Valley? Your program is great and quite unique in my opinion.
Thank you
DERICK,
I would not recommend one school over another since each child has different needs, but here is what I know: Rancho Salano on Greenway at 56th Street is excellent academically. Lot’s of homework. However, we pulled our boys from there because we were displeased with classroom facilities, the lack of boys overall in attendance (although this may have changed), and the attitude of some of the administrators and teachers. All that could easily have changed over the past few years, however. I mention Rancho because it is well worth a look.
Phoenix Country Day is very expensive, highly competitive, and as much a status symbol for the parents as for the kids. But I understand they are excellent academically.
Our boys attend 8th and 6th grade as Scottsdale Christian Academy, on Tatum just north or Thunderbird. We love the school and its sense of community. I must say it is probably not as academically challenging as Rancho; but then the boys don’t have three hours of homework assigned each night either, which we regard as a plus.
For high school, there are all these schools plus three excellent Catholic Schools: Brophy for boys and Xavier for girls downtown just south of Camelback on Central. My daughter went to Xavier. They are absolutely excellent schools. I’ve also heard that Notre Dame in North Scottsdale is doing an excellent job as well.
Sorry I don’t have the names of outstanding private schools in the east or west valleys. I’m sure there are several. Good luck!
–Keith
Great story about replacing your passport/visa in China. Now I know where the bureaucrats at the City of Tucson Department of Developmental Services (building permits) learned their trade. We call it the Department of Redundancy Department.
AL,
Very funny funny!
–Keith
Dear Keith,
I listened in pain this morning of your horrific account of your lost passport and visa. If Alan were not with you, you would still be standing in line.
Although you generously admitted blame, your travel agent should share some, as they did not properly prepare you.
I carry in my luggage a photocopy of the passport page with my picture, and four extra passport pictures, available for a replacement passport should mine get lost.
When I travel I carry three credit cards. Despite American Express advertising it is not accepted everyplace in the world. Therefore, my second card can be either a VISA or MasterCard.
My third card is stored safely in my luggage. Hopefully your wallet will not be stolen, but if so you have a back up credit card and it not the end of your trip.
Before I leave I make a photocopy of my three credit cards, drivers’ license, and put them with the photocopy of my passport in my luggage. I call each credit card Company and advise them of my travels. I also ask them for an International toll free telephone number in case I have to report them lost or stolen.
I have traveled to 18 countries, some more than once. I am well traveled, and have visited Australia, Bahamas, Canada, Cyprus, France, Greece, Ireland, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Spain, Thailand, Ukraine, Vietnam, and Virgin Islands.
I just returned from eighteen days in Spain and Portugal. I did misplace my passport briefly, but since I am always prepared with extra photos it didn’t bother me.
Since all my travel involves airplanes, I carry around my neck a Nylon Pre-Board Organizer. The backside has a zippered pocket where I put my passport. There it is easily accessible to show Customs Officers, airline personnel, and at your hotel, when you check in.
Go to the below web site for item 9301
http://www.travelsmith.com/
Go to the below web site for items SV03 or LB904

If you have one of these items your passport should always be in the same place every time you look for it.
Safe sailing
Loyal Sunday listener.

GERALD,
You are clearly a far more accomplished traveler than am I! Thanks for the excellent advice. Hope you are able to catch the radio show via this site even as you travel!

Hi Keith,
My husband John and I are enjoying your commentary regarding your travel down the Yangtze River. We took a Victoria Cruise Ship tour in June and were amazed by what we saw and experienced. We flew into Shanghai, toured that city and then flew to Yichang where we boarded our boat and began a 5 day river cruise. We visited the Three Gorges Dam site and went through the locks. We found the Three Gorges area to be beautiful even though most of our days on the river were rainy and overcast. We also boarded a smaller vessel that carried us through the picturesque Lesser gorges , along a tributary of the Yantze, the Danning River. The scenery was magnificient, but, we could relate to your comments regarding debris and dead animals floating down the river.
We visited Chongqing, Xian and Beijing and enjoyed our trip as we learned so much about the country, culture and Chinese people. We really came to appreciate “4 star” western bathrooms!
Thanks for sharing your experiences with all of us and safe travels to you, your family and crew,
Rolene and John Dinsdale
Program Listeners
ROLENE AND JOHN,
It appears you took the same trip, only in the opposite direction up river. Truer words were never spoken regarding bathrooms!
–Keith
I cannot believe you seriously appealed to the poor state of China’s health care system as an attack on proposals for universal health care in the United States. I can scarcely think of a tactic that displays less intellectual honesty than that.
There are arguments to be made against universal health care, but implying, for instance, that the United States would no longer know how to sanitize instruments or use modern magnification tools if it were to have universal health care is entirely ludicrous. Do you really think that doctors in Australia, Canada, France, Japan, Germany, and the UK (just to name a few) practice medicine the same way the Chinese do?
MATT,
I stand by my comments. Socialized medicine allocates scarcity. Only free-market medicine provides meaningful incentives for innovation; and only free-market medicine improves automatically through market-induced competition. All medical systems including ours have issues. Never did I say or imply that those nations you mention allocated as little scarcity as China. However, visit the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale from late September through April and you will find the place packed — I mean packed — with Canadians seeking treatment other than what they receive at home under their socialized, government run system.
Keith
Really like your show about China, I am currently listening delayed (via your website), listening to your show on Shanghai. I listened to you “live” via KFYI when you were in HK and you had me intrigued, that’s why I am back. I have not listened to you in quite a while (years). Your sale to AIG was news to me too. Great job explaining to us all about China. I look forward to listening to your Jul 15 show and hopefully catch you “live” on KFYI again. Happy travels.
Chong
CHONG,
Point of clarification: I sold my firm to WealthTrust. They elected to affiliate the company with AIG Financial Advisors, as had we. Glad you are enjoying the show and website.
–Keith
Keith,
Thanks so much for sharing your fabulous global adventure. It’s like we all get to travel with you. Mac looked like he was guiding you well. His outfit looks like it would help protect from the sun here in AZ as well.
Cordially, Jim Vaughn
PS. Did you get a waterproof belt and passport case yet so you even have it when swimming.?
JIM,
Haven’t gotten the waterproof passport case yet, but am definitely looking. Thanks for the kind words, and yes, Mac did a great job — and had a great time!

(This e-mail relates to security. PLEASE DO NOT POST. )
Dear Mr. DeGreen, I’m writing this short note to mention concerns about piracy that exists from southern Philippines, along Indonesian Islands, Straits of Malacca and into the Indian Ocean. Around 4 years ago, an American pirate victim survivor was interviewed on coasttocoastam.com I think he wrote a book about being boarded at night and life spared only because pirates saw family pictures. They robbed him, tied him up and left. I do not recall his name, the book title, nor whether George Noory or Art Bell interviewed him.
I don’t know if one can maintain any contacts with US, British, or Australian naval vessels or not, or obtain up to date piracy and criminal activity warnings from the
United States State Department, etc. It would be easy for an “ill intentioned visitor” (or a bribed port maintenance crew member) to hide a tracking device aboard to effect an intercept at a point of their choice. I sincerely hope there is a lot of protection reduncancy in place. (Hopefully Nordhaven has capability of keeping the craft under some type of special protective surveillance via satellite. (And only when the captain requests such back up.)
I am not a psychic, only a concerned listener who recalls the frightening interview on coasttocoastam several years ago. (As a US Navy sailor, we went through that region in the early 1950s.) Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable cruise. We hope to see you back here in Arizona in a year or two.
Sincerely, an Arizona radio program listener.
JOHN,
I appreciate your concern and want you to know that we have taken, and will continue to take, all necessary precautions. There are a number of sources for current information on piracy. In the China Sea and Sulu Sea regions matters have actually improved substantially due to increased naval enforcement by several countries.
Nevertheless, we exercise extreme caution and are well equipped for any contingency.
–Keith
I’m really enjoying your travel log show on KFYI.
Hi Keith,
Great radio talk shows!
An idea for your web site:
Create a shorter alias for your web site, because some users
may have difficulty keying in your long web site domain name.
For example, barnesandnoble.com uses the alias bn.com (try it).
You could use tgacom.com (or similar) to link to theglobaladventure.com.
And you could reserve this second domain name at godaddy.com.
Next, in a “dummy” web page at http://www.tgacom.com/index.htm place the HTML line:
Then, whenever someone browses to tgacom.com, they will be immediately
transferred to http://www.theglobaladventure.com/.
Best Regards,
Patrick M.
THANKS, PAT.
We agree, and have tried many alternatives, including tga.com. But nothing great is available. We’ll keep trying, however.
–Keith
Keith,
I have been following your adventures from the start. I am currently in the middle of a second career. I am in PA medical school, so my question is medical in nature. I am interested in the medical care available to the cruising community, and also the smaller islands of the South Pacific. What is their availability and access to medical care. I have several friends who own Nordhavns, and I am sold on the boat. My plan is to join the community, and hopefully have a mobile medical clinic, as sort of a way to avoid a return to the land of “carpet dwellers”. I would love to get yours, and any of the others on board, feelings on this. Thank you in advance.
Curtis
Curtis,
For medical protection while traveling, we use a company called MedLink, which, coincidentally, is based in Phoenix. They are widely used by Americans who take their yachts into foreign waters as most U.S. medical plans provide limited coverage abroad.
Medlink outfitted our ship with all sorts of lifesaving equipment, and provides training if requested. They will also cover medical expenses just about anywhere; and in a pinch, will medevac you or your remains back to the U.S. You can reach them at 1-800-603-6332, or at 602-417-3385.
As far as the quality of medical care available where we’ve been so far, I think the answer is that it would greatly disappoint most Americans. I understand there are private clinics in the Philippines, for example, and probably elsewhere as well, that provide fairly high-quality care. But the quality of care for most people where we’ve been — in both private and socialized systems — is not anywhere near U.S. standards.
When Lynn took our son, Mac, to a hospital in Singapore for an ear infection, for example, she was told it was the best hospital in town. Yet it was like traveling into the 1950s. Sanitation and was awful, and supplies were antiquated.
You may take assertions from the likes of that idiot Michael Moore that America’s health care ranks 54th (or some such ridiculous number) in the world only as proof positive that untreated degenerative brain disease continues to flourish among America’s liberal community.
Keith
Hi Keith,
I love the photos on your web site. Just one minor change. One of the photos with you, Dermot and Larry, you put his name down as Bill.
Hope to see you and your crew again.
Kaud
I”ll fix it right away, Kaud.
–Keith
Keith……..
Great job with the show from overseas. I’ve also enjoyed the website and the Ohio pictures are as much fun as the mainland China pictures.
My wife and son and I will be moving to the Lafayette Indiana area whenever our home here in the valley sells. As a regular listener to your show, I am as impressed with the political/social commentary as the investment insights. Having spent 26 years in financial services, before retiring last year, I know your suggestions are sound and time-tested.
If we end up staying in Phoenix (because of the current housing market), I will have to talk you into lunch sometime. It is not everyday that I find someone so like-minded who is a principal in a financial services company. It would be worth coming out of retirement.
All the Best,
Richard
RICHARD,
You betcha. I look forward to it. And thanks for the URL offer. I am passing it on to my webmaster.
