In your opening speech last Sunday morning you sounded like presidential material. You mentioned someone is trying to convince you to run for governor again. I think you should skip that and run for President because what you have to say sounds a lot better than what anyone else who is talking about running for president has to say.
Keith, I am researching purchasing a boat like the Nordhavn, although I would like the 43′ or similar. Am interested in your trip and experiences you have, especially with your boat and equipment. Later have financial question about boat as a investment tool. Good Luck…
Keith;
Love your show. Wish you well and godspeed on your travels! Please go to this site: http://www.noonsite.com/ it has good info on ocean piracy.
Jack
Jack,
Thanks for your kind words. Yes, great minds think alike! http://www.noonsite.com has good info on many things — including piracy, clearing ports, etc., etc. I refer to it often. Thanks for following The Global Adventure!
Keith
Keith, A couple of weeks ago I heard you say you had to get in touch with the Honolulu Yacht Club to arrange bearthing. Hoefully you have now found out there ain’t no such animal: it is the Hawaii YC you want which is located on the eastern side of the Ala Wai boat harbor across the turning basin from the Waikiki YC. I was a member of HYC for 35 years and spent some quality time there for sailboat races, dinners, transpac parties etc. You will find them the most hospitable bearthing facility in the Pacific, perhaps beyond. I do not have the phone number, but I am sure by now you have gotten it OK. I wanted to pass this along to you that Sunday, but alas, the wife said it was church time!
Have a good and safe voyage. Would love to join you, but will look forward to following your progress from my armchair.
Aloha, Ad Pace
Addison,
Thanks for your very kind note. You are absolutely correct! We’re staying at The Hawaii Yacht Club. In fact, they are hosting us, and we’ll be broadcasting our radio show from there on April 15. I also appreciate the location information. Every piece of information helps when you are entering a harbor for the first time!
Keith
As a boating enthusiast for over 40 years, I can appreciate the beauty of your craft. I previously had a 43′ Mathews and before that a 30′ Egg Harbor, both of which aare high quality boats.
After viewing the information I was surprised that it is a single screw craft. My last two boats were twin screw and I couldn’t imagine having one engine out at sea in addition to effective handling and docking.
Love your show from a retired Investment Adviser and Broker.
Wishing you a safe trip.
Bob Scalzi
I used to listen to your show while waiting for Bill Handel’s show. Now I tune in just to hear yours.
Terry Charuhas, Scottsdale
Bob,
Thanks for your kind comments about our ship, The Global Adventure, and about our show.
The Nordhavn 55 is not only sturdy, she does have beautiful lines. I’m not familiar with the Egg Harbor you had, but know the 43 Matthews was beautiful. I’ll bet you really enjoyed that boat.
Regarding the single screw: Actually, that’s what appealed to me about the Nordhavn. The ship comes with either a standard 325 HP John Deere diesel, or a 385 HP Lugger. Either engine is utterly reliable and easy to maintain. Having a single centerline screw and full-displacement hull provides tremendous efficiency. That’s why, on a fuel payload of about 2,250 gallons the 55 has a theoretical range of 4,000 miles, at about 1200 RPM. The engine would love to run at up to 1800 RPM There is also a small 70 HP “get home” engine with its own screw. But I
rarely hear of Nordhavn owners having to use it.
The whole idea is to traverse long distances reliably and as economically as possible Dan Streech and Jim Leishman, owners of the company Pacific Asian Enterprises that builds Nordhavns tell me that’s what the Norhavn line was built to accomplish.
I know of a few owners have had to be “walked through” a diagnostic on their engine via Sat-phone, but Nordhavn got them up and running in no time. Their service is excellent, and 99.9% of the time engine maintenance problems boil down to “read the instructions”.
Because there is only one screw we must be careful to maintain the packing properly; but due to the hull configuration the propeller blades are well protected. Nordhavn also added line cutters to the blades at the shaft, which helps avoid the hassle of cutting away debris from time to time.
I’m glad you enjoy the show, Bob, and since you are a former financial advisor yourself, I take that as high praise. Hope you’ll continue to enjoy the show and website. We shove off next Sunday!
Keith
Thank you, Terry! I accept the nomination! Seriously, we plan to focus on the wonderful opportunity presented by our Global Adventure project for now. We’ll see what the future holds in a few years…
–Keith
Terry,
Thanks for your great comment!
Mike,
Sorry to be so long responding. I think the Nordhavn 43 is a beautiful boat. You know, the owners and employees of Nordhavn took their rugged 40 around the world a couple years ago! I credit Nordhavn for providing potential owners with many choices — all good.
Thanks for following The Global Adventure!
Keith
Keith,
Great pics on the boat. Why don’t you join the “N55 Heads Up Report”?
This is a Blog just for N55 owners. We have 21 members all posting great stuff about our experiences/problems/discussions from the guys out there doing it, and what we can offer the future owners in setting up and optioning their boats. Will just need your e-mail address to send out an invitation if you agree.
Best regards,

Peter, absolutely!

Hello, I listen to your show and really like it.
I have a friend of mine, who is a writer. She has written a number of short stories and right now she wants to write a short story about anyone who may have sailed in the Hawaii area with a sailboat. I just wondered if you knew any stories or actual people that may have done sailing in the Hawaii area that I might refer to her?
thanks guy cooper Phx
Guy,
I’ve met many people who claim to have sailed to Hawaii, but to be honest, they were just acquaintances, and I don’t have any names. Perhaps someone will see this exchange and volunteer their experience. You might also check out a great website: http://www.noonsite.com. Your friend can probably hook up with someone there.
–Keith
Hello,
I found this site on the Nordhavn web page. I’m a finance major currently and a huge Nordhavn fan so I was quite blown away when I found this. Great combination. I would love to do this sort of thing when I get older, whether it’s broadcast finance, economics, or even travel. Great site, keep up the good work. I’ll surely be listening to some of your broadcasts.
Ben
Thanks, Ben! Keep studying, Man, and someday soon we’ll all be carrying your bags!
–Keith
Keith and the Notble Adventurers,
Good luck on your voyage..I hope to be joining you out there on a NOdy of my own in the future.
After viewing your pics I noticed that you aren’t using paravanes…why not?
David
Keith,
Best wishes for a fabulous and safe adventure. I look forward to hearing your broadcasts and following your progress. By the way, you chose a fine boat to make this trip. Best of luck.
Sincerely

Thanks, Dean. I could not agree more about the boat!
–Keith
David,
Once the ship gets beyond a certain size, it is Nordhavn’s position that paravanes become just too large and cumbersome to deploy. Instead, The Global Adventure is equipped with massive fin stabilizers on either side of the hull well below the water line. They do a great job, and provide a very comfortable ride.
Keith,
I saw your boat a few weeks ago when I arrived in San Diego on “Nexus” (N47) with the Biggs. I’ve listened to your show for years and am looking forward to following your adventures on your beautiful boat! If you need crew, let us know!
Jim
Thanks, Jim!
Keith,
I’m a regular listener to your Sunday show. This is the first time I’ve visited your site – WOW what an adventure. You’re kinda hanging it all out there, aren’t you?
I had a question about the “equity structured notes” you’ve mentioned a few times. It seems that there’s not alot of people are up to speed on exactly what they are and how they are used. Also, the only info I’ve found relates to indexes – you’ve specifically mentioned those that were based on an underlying common stock (I think) like apple computer, etc.
I’m not wanting to make a mistake working with someone who just knows how to sell something, but doesn’t really know the nuts and bolts. Out of the referral program that you offer, can you narrow it down for me to a few advisors who are familiar with these types of products. I really like the concept – but don’t have confidence to select appropriate notes and also don’t have the confidence to select an advisor to assist (problem is: I don’t even know what I don’t know).
Thanks and bon voyage ….
Dave
Keith:
Enjoy the trip!!! Say hi to Rip for me. Let me know if you want help getting your blog sent out.
Congratulations, and best wishes for a safe voyage.

Hi Keith. I’ve been a listener of your show for several years. I think you do a great job. I’ve been “in the business” for 35 years, the first 10 of which were with Pacific Life (then Pacific Mutual Life) ending up as a manager in Seattle. I “saw the light” and became a CFP in 1987 and started my own firm. I now have about $22 million in LPL’s fee-based program. I wish I could say I have reached the pinnacle you have reached and started a cruise like the one upon which you are embarked.
I wish you safe passage on your cruise Keith, and will be listening in most Sunday mornings. Watch out for the pirates!
One little footnote Keith. I know that video clips don’t one one justice when looking at the human body, but it does appear that you might want to spend more time taking care of the only body you will ever have. I hope you take this in the spirit in which it is made. I’m 66, 6’2″ or so and weigh 167 lbs. I run 3 miles every single morning and do 45 minutes of Yoga each evening while watching Fox News. I hope you can think about this comment and include in your global adventure a plan to drop some pounds so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor and your kids can see their father and grandfather on his 90th birthday!
Good Luck and God Speed Keith.

~ G’morning Keith & crew…
– Just a quick note to recomend a site enhancement.
-Twill be neat if an easily clicked(from main pg)
“Progress / Position” showing Lat / Lon specifics is included. With that lil additional info, we can then view weather, sea-temps, & perhaps even get a close enough pic to see TGA water-craft.
~ An automatically updated every;
– say 5 minutes Lat / Lon feature seems a good thing to me.
-AU & AG are showing me indicators of big moves likely $oon on the way… All the Best, BuyNOwww
We agree. We are setting up a GPS driven map within the next week or so!
–Keith
Thanks,Mike. I’m not sure what picture you were looking at, Mike, but I am 6′ tall and weigh 178 soaking wet. We have installed exercise equipment, including an eliptical trainer and sit up machine aboard. You can be sure I’ll be using them!
–Keith
Thanks, Ken. Rip says you are the ultimate expert on sending blogs. I’ve asked him to give you a call, to advise you of what we are doing, and perhaps to obtain from you some ideas on how to do things better/easier/less expensively.
Thanks again.
–Keith
Dave, I’m working on an article regarding ESNs and hope to have it posted here on the site in about a week. Hang in there, and thanks for the kind words.
Dad-
Congrats and Bon Voyage! Kiley and the grandkids and I would have loved to have been there but, alas, the timing coincided with my new office opening in Cincinnati. Gotta stay focused so I can get my own boat someday!
We are all looking forward to following you on this Global Adventure. Be safe!
Love,
Keith Paul
I love you, Son! Give Kiley, Marie, Nora, and Sir Anthony kisses from grandpa!
Thanks, Ken. We definately plan to avail ourselves of your expertise. Rip says Hi.”
Keith,
Congratulations! We are very excited to follow the journey. Maybe its just the newness of everything but I definitely found myself wanting even more info, pics, video etc.
I keep picturing the scen from Jaws when the town Sheriff and Richard Dreyfus get drunk with Quinn. (I won’t say which one of those guys reminds me of you!)
Mary and I are confident that your trip will be a huge success for you and the entire team onboard the Global Adventure.
While I am back here in San Diego slugging it out with the markets, I will be living vicariously through you!
Cheers,

Thanks, Herb! I’ll keep you posted regarding sharks. However, as you know, I am an attorney. Therefore sharks do not attack me. Professional courtesy!
Keith,
Having done a lot of blue water sailing I will be watching with interest to see how your power boat behaves at sea etc. I’ve sailed LAX to HNL many times and am about to do it again in July when we sail yet another Transpac race ending at the Hawaii Yacht club. Enjoy your trip…I got to the USA via sailboat after an 18 month trip from Sydney Australia back in 1978..probably the best eighteen months of my life..Now I fly the same trip in 14 hrs..and get paid for it !! courtesy of my airline employer.
Looks like you are going to berth at HYC (Hawaii Yacht club) http://www.hawaiiyachtclub.org I am a member and look forward to seeing the boat tied up at the aloha dock right out in front of the club. Its a beautiful location for dinner etc) and we have a very friendly group of members.
Dont forget to go visit the Charthouse which is located a 5 minute walk from the club in the Alawai Marina. The bartenders Guy and Jerry mix a mean drink and the food is exceptional. Just in case your looking for a place with an elevated view of the whole marina..Sorento’s is located on the top floor of the Ilikai hotel (just opposite Chart House)great food/spectacular location/awsome sunset views. As you can tell from my email address I live here in Hawaii but am based (work wise) out of SFO so welcome to our island home and our very friendly HYC.
All the best and ALOHA from the Hawaiian Islands.
Mike S
Thanks, Mike. Great info!
–Keith
Keith,
We have been following your voyage from Seattle, can you tell us what is in the white barrels on the aft deck?
Todd,
Rum!
Actually, in an abundance of caution we brought along about 300 extra gallons of fuel. That’s what’s in the barrels. However, the theoretical range of the Nordhavn 55 is 4,000 miles — considerably farther than the 2600 nm between San Diego and Hawaii. But we wanted to be prepared to dodge any spring storms, so I’m glad we brought the fuel.
–Keith
Hi Keith,
I did not get a chance to say a proper goodbye so I will now say hello and hope you are safe.
I spent today with Lynn, we went shopping(surprise) for Easter goodies for the kids. We are getting together tomorow and going golfing prior to the wonderful feast that mom is preparing.
Everything good back here in Az. Have a wonderful trip and a Happy Easter.
Love Lisa
Thanks, Lisa. I miss all of you this Easter Sunday. Have an extra helping at Mom’s for me!
–Keith
Hello Keith,
We have been following your adventures and are very excited for you. What does the night sky look like in the middle of the ocean without the interference of city lights?
Hi Keith,
I have listened to your show for the past couple years and I have always enjoyed your perspective and advice on financial issues. I have been an investor since my Grandfather gave me some stock in American General Insurance Co. (now AIG) when I was about 8 years old. He would give me about 10 shares every few years for a birthday present. I have added to that portfolio and it has grown to nearly $750,000. over the past 42 years (I’m 50). Keep up the good work and I’ll be listening for your investment tips and advice.
Steve.
P.S. I’m a sport fisherman and like to fish for Tuna, Yellow Tail and Doe Doe about 200 miles SW of San Diego. We go out for 4 to 5 days without seeing land, so I know exactly what your feeling out in that vast beautiful ocean! You are at the mercy of the ocean and mother nature.
Keith, I am so excited for you and your family you all deserve everything. You have been a great help to me and my family over the past several years. Happy and safe sailing and happy easter, I just got home from Church and said a prayer for all of you.
Don
Thank you, Don, for your kind words and prayers. Back at you on this beautiful Easter Sunday!
–Keith
Ken,
Except for about an hour during my midnight-to-three AM watch last night, I’ve only witnessed moonlit skies so far. However, before moon rise last night the stars were overwhelming.
With nothing obstructing the horizon, and with no city lights to obscure even the slightest detail, the starlit sky seems as a giant dome that stretches in all directions.
All the constellations were out, but I think because of the moisture in the air, I did not see the Milky Way across the sky as I often have from up on the Rim in the dry northern Arizona sky.
Still, there really is no comparison. The vastness of the heavens is profoundly apparent from a ship at sea. It is really very humbling.

Dear Keith:
When you get to China, I am interested in Guangzhou Investment Company. This company is headquartered in Guangdong Province. It builds houses, shopping centers, etc. and also owns the more modern roads there for which it charges tolls. It trades in Hong Kong under the symbol 0123 for abut $2 Hong Kong dollars. It even pays a dividend. Not too long ago it spun off what I believe to be the first REIT in China.
The central Chinese govrnment owns a significant stake.
Last year I bought 50,000 shares and intend to let it ride for quite some time. The price per share seems to continue going up even though the Chinese economy is becoming somewhat rocky and the government seems to be trying to put the brakes on new housing and other construction.
I thought that you might be planning to interview some broker or other expert in Hong Kong and that you could possibly ask about Guangzhou Investment Company.
Best Wishes on your voyage.

Thanks, Steve, for your kind words. You’re right, it is awesome out here.

Keith, keep your eye open at night for the ISS…it orbits every 90 minutes or so and is clearly visible to the naked eye..even better with a good set of marine binocs.
The other item to watch for is the green flash at sunset…your professional crew know all about it …if you dont get to see it for real some have been known to witness it through the bottom of a Heiikin or Rolling Rock bottle.
Safe Sailing

Keith,
Hola from Marbella Spain. We are just checking your log before we head off to sleep.
If you do not have Marbella or other parts of Spain on your agenda, I suggest you add them. There are more giant constructioni cranes dotted across the landscape then I have ever scene in any American city.
I’d be curious what your thoughts are about the economy. (Particularly luxury Real Estate for American investors!)
While you are at it, make sure you take the crew to Restaurante Antonia in Marbella and order the Sea Bass baked in salt. Its worth the fuel!
Buenos Noches,
Herb, Mary, Spencer and Hope. AKA Humberto, Maria, Spencer y Esperanza
Humberto,
I’m counting on YOU to tell US what’s happening there, my friend! As one of the country’s leading ETF portfolio managers, your analysis will no doubt be extremely valuable.
Meanwhile, I’m heading in the wrong direction, so please cover my back on the whole
Spain thing.
Thanks. My best to Mary and the kids.
